Robert Pateson’s Victorian cartes de visite

I was recently sent a number of cartes de visite photographs by Ron Cosens. They were taken by the Preston photographer Robert Pateson.

Ron, a founder member of the Photographic Collectors Club of Great Britain in 1977, manages the Victorian Image Collection. Ron’s special interest is cartes de visite, of which he has more than 100,000. He has written extensively on the subject. Discover more here: https://www.cartedevisite.co.uk/

The carte de visite was a small photograph, immensely popular from the 1850s until late in the 19th century. Ron’s collection is not online. As he says: ‘At 84 (or even 44) I would not have had time.’

In our subsequent email correspondence, Ron pointed me to Gillian Jones’s Lancashire Professional Photographers 1840-1940 book. Gillian combed trade directories and local newspapers to amass a vast database of thousands of professional photographers working in the historic county of Lancashire.

She includes 151 photographers with studios in Preston. I am adding them to a spreadsheet, which will be searchable by name, address and date. When complete, I will add it to this website.

By the way, Gillian’s book is available for loan on the Internet Archive. Members (easy to join) can read it there. The first half of the book contains a short history of photography with special reference to Lancashire and a useful guide to dating photographs. The second section is the directory.

The images, which are all from Ron’s collection, are the front and reverse sides of four of Robert Pateson’s cartes de visite.

  1. Im too clumsy of finger to comment with success on here frustratingly! I just composed a longish comment, the mobile phone slipped in my hand and I found myself looking at another of your pages! Hence I have no idea if my original.comment on this article was sent off or not as I havent worked out how (or if )one can view comments! Im also confused how frequently the “subscribe” pop up mesdage kerps popping up as Im sure I have subscribed. Can the system not differentiate between random reader and subscribers 🤔? I wont try to write the originsl query intil I hear from you as to whether any comment from me has landed in your inbox or not. Many thanks!!

  2. I’ll just post your latest comment, Eve. In the previous one you mentioned the irritating occurrences of request to subscribe to the the site. It’s not just you, I get them as well. I’ll investigate and see if I can remove them. Bear in mind, it might be beyond my WordPress capabilities.
