Land holdings of the lessees of Corporation land in statute acres. A field named New Marsh Meadow on the plan in the area of the Corporation’s 17th-century marsh reclamation and measuring roughly 2.8 acres does not seem to be in the survey. The reclamation is discussed elsewhere.

Land holdings by acreage

Plan showing land ownership by acreage
Fig 2: Land holdings in the Lang survey grouped by size in statute acres. The green plots are not in the survey

The majority of landowners in the Lang survey had very small holdings, and often merely plots of land. Of the 95 landowners in the survey (including the corporation) eight had plots of less than a statute acre, 59 less than 10 acres and 73 less than 20 acres. Only five had estates larger than 60 acres and only two more than 100 acres (John Atherton of Walton and the corporation). An indication of the dispersal of land holdings in the township is shown by the fact that of the 104 owners and lessees (of corporation land; one, Nicholas Winckley, was both an owner and a lessee) in the survey some 31 had only one plot of land. Of the rest, 37 had less than five plots, 16 less than 10 plots and only 21 ten or more plots.
