Richard Assheton of Cuerdale was born shortly before or after the death of his father, John, a Royalist captain killed at Bristol in 1643. He married Mary, daughter of George Piggott and sister of Robert, and in 1680 inherited the Downham estate on the death of Sir Ralph Assheton of Whalley.
