Walter, Theobald (d. 1205), also known as Theobold Butler. Son of Sir Hervey Walter of Weeton, and Matilda. His brother, Hubert, became archbishop of Canterbury. In 1194 King Richard appointed him sheriff of Lancaster and gave him the whole of Amounderness, which he lost on King John’s accession in 1199 but regained in 1202. According to Hewitson: ‘Theobald, in the reign of King John, brought an action against the free burgesses of Preston “concerning gibbet and gaol” in the town, and by way of settling the difference they paid a fine, consisting of ten marks and a palfrey.’
