Rev. Alfred Salts, LL.D., The Vicarage, Littleborough; son of the late Robert Salts, of Preston; born at Preston, December 26th, 1838; educated at Preston Grammar School, and St. John’s College, Cambridge; B.A., 1860; LL.M., 1863; LL.D., 1872. Ordained Deacon, 1862; Priest, 1863; Curate of St. Jude, Leeds, 1862; Curate of St. John’s, Leeds, 1863; Curate of Dent, 1864; Curate of Rochdale Parish Church, 1865-72; Vicar of Littleborough, 1872 to present time. Married Mary, daughter of the late Samuel Blakelock, of Red Hall, Leeds.

Albert Simpson, J.P., Elmhurst, Garstang, and Burghill Grange, Herefordshire; eldest son of Thomas and Maria Simpson; born July 20th, 1838. Justice of the Peace for the County of Lancaster since 1870, for the county borough of Preston since 1885, and for the county of Radnor; Director and last Chairman of the Fylde Waterworks Company; Chairman of the Hartford Mills Company and of the Park Lane Twist Company, Preston, and of the North Lancashire Manufacturers’ Accident Insurance Company; Vice-Chairman of the North Lancashire Master Cotton Spinners‘ and Manufacturers’ Association; Chairman of the Preston Property Owners’ and Ratepayers’ Association. Married, firstly, August, 1862, Sarah Ann, daughter of John Jackson, of Oakenclough, Garstang; she died in 1899, leaving issue three sons and three daughters; secondly, October, 1900, Lillian Emma, daughter of David Dilworth, Hillside, Garstang.

George Singleton, J.P., Kirkland Hall, Garstang; son of Richard and Margaret Singleton; born at Poulton Hall, Poulton-le-Fylde, March, 1840; educated at the Grammar School, Preston. Interested in the breeding and rearing of Shire horses, and in the improvement of his estates; member of the Council of the County of Lancashire Agricultural Society, and Chairman of the Garstang and District Agricultural Society; appointed Justice of the Peace for the County of Lancaster, May, 1390; Chairman of the Kirkland Parish Council; many years Chairman of the Technical Instruction Committee, Garstang Union. Married Eleanor, daughter of the late William Parkinson, of Cockerham, and has had issue three sons, viz., Richard Kirkly, William Parkinson, and John Edward, and five daughters.

William Smith, Newsham House, Broughton, Preston; eldest son of the late Joseph Smith, of Lancaster; born at Lancaster, June 14th, 1849; educated at Appleton Academy, near Warrington, and St. Joseph’s College, Clapham, S.W. Member of the firm of Walmsley and Smith, corn merchants and millers, Barrow-in-Furness and Lancaster, until 1898; elected to the Board of Guardians, Lancaster Union, about 1890; to Town Council of Lancaster, 1890; Mayor of Lancaster, 1891; Alderman, 1893; elected Member of Parliament for North Lonsdale Division of Lancashire, July, 1892; retired, 1895; President of North Lancashire Cricket League; Vice-President of Lancaster Infirmary; Director of Lancaster Banking Company; member of Lancaster Charity Commissioners and Port Commissioners; Donor of Children’s Wing of new Lancaster Infirmary; Chairman of the Finance, Parliamentary. and General Purposes Committee of Lancaster Corporation; Governor of Lancaster Grammar School. Married, May 14th, 1872, Ellen, youngest daughter of the late Henry Verity, of Lancaster, and has one son and three daughters.

Frederick Arthur Stanley, the Right Hon. Earl Derby, K.G., G.C.B., P.C., Knowsley Park, Prescot, Lancashire; Witherslack Hall, Grange-over-Sands, Lancashire; Holwood, Beckenham, Kent, and 33, St. James’s Square, London, S.W.; 16th Earl and brother of the 15th Earl of Derby; was born on January 15th, 1841, and educated at Eton; entered the Army, and retired as Captain in the Grenadier Guards in 1865. Has sat as Member of Parliament for Preston and for Blackpool; has been Lord of the Admiralty; Financial Secretary for War, and to the Treasury; Secretary for War, and for the Colonies; President of the Board of Trade, and Governor-General of Canada. Was elected Mayor of Liverpool in 1895, and Mayor of Preston for the Guild year on November 9th, 1901; Lord Lieutenant of Lancashire since 1897. Married, in 1864, Constance, daughter of the 4th Earl of Clarendon, K.G.: heir: Lord Edward George Villiers Stanley, born 1865. The Stanleys have had a long connection with Lancashire, and own a large amount of property in the county. Clubs: Carlton and White’s.

Rev. Charles Edmund Stocks, M.A., St. Mark’s Vicarage, Preston; son of Joseph Stocks, of Manchester; born at Manchester, December 25th, 1865; educated at Manchester Grammar School, Owens College, Manchester (Bishop Lee, Greek Testament Prize), and Christ’s College, Cambridge, 1887-92 (Bishop Porteous Gold Medal); Classical Tripos, 2nd Class, 1890; Theological Tripos, 2nd Class, 1892; B.A., 1890; M.A., 1894. Vicar of St. Mark’s, Preston, since 1901; Ordained Deacon 1892, and Priest, 1893, by the Bishop of Liverpool; Curate of St. Leonard’s, Bootle, Liverpool, 1892-94; Senior Curate of North Meols, Southport, 1894-98; Vicar of Widnes, 1898-190I. Married, May 9th, 1899, Emily Josephine, daughter of T. Frank Poole, of Shrewsbury, and niece of the late Bishop Poole, of Japan.

Benjamin Sykes, Priors Lea, Broughton; son of Robert Sykes, of Fleetwood; born at Poulton-le-Fylde; educated at Goosnargh. Head of the firm of Garlick and Sykes, civil engineers, of Preston, Blackpool and London, who have carried out, amongst other large contracts, the Preston Waterworks, the Preston Docks (this contract being for over £1,000,000), Preston Covered Market, the Padiham and Hapton, and the Fylde Waterworks, the Central Jetty, and Promenade and Carriage Drive, Blackpool, Sea Waterworks Blackpool, the engineering for the Blackpool and Fleetwood Electric Tramroad, etc.; Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers; Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society; Chairman of the Preston Gas Company, and of other companies; Consul at Preston for the Republic of Liberia. Married, in 1865, the daughter of James Melling, yeoman, the Old Hall, Winmarleigh, and has six sons, Robert and Benjamin, associated with their father in business; James, in South Africa, where he served with Methuen’s Mounted Infantry; Walter, now Resident Surgeon at the Birmingham and Midland Eye Hospital; and Alfred and William, dental and electrical engineering students respectively.

Arthur Roger Tomlinson, M.A., J.P., The Vicarage, Bolton-le-Sands; son of Thomas Tomlinson [of the Preston Tomlinsons], Bencher of the Inner Temple; born at Westminster, in 1844; educated at Westminster School, and Christ Church, Oxford. Vicar of Bolton-le-Sands; ordained at Lichfield, in 1867; Rural Dean of Tunstall; formerly Rector of St. Michael’s, Penkivil, and Rural Dean of Probus; Chaplain to the late Viscountess of Falmouth; Vicar of Bolton-le-Sands, 1899; Justice of the Peace for Cornwall. Married Theresa Juliana Marie, daughter of the late Captain Symonds, late 5th Foot, and grand daughter of the late Admiral Sir W. Symonds, Kt., C.B.; eldest son, Thomas Symonds, barrister-at-law; second son, Arthur William, Lieutenant R.N. ; has two daughters and one other son.

Robert Trimble, M.D., 9, Winckley Square, Preston; third son of Dr. Trimble, of Castle Bellingham, Ireland; born at Castle Bellingham, co. Louth, Ireland; educated at the Royal College of Surgeons, Ireland, and University of Glasgow; M.D., F.R.C.S.L, D.P.H. Was for nine years Medical Officer of the Castle Bellingham Dispensary, Ardee Union, co. Louth, Ireland, also Surgeon to the Royal Irish Constabulary and Coastguards; Hon. Medical Officer of the Preston and County of Lancaster Queen Victoria Royal Infirmary; Medical Officer of Health to the Walton-le-Dale Urban District Council. Recreations: shooting and salmon fishing. Married the eldest daughter of the late Thomas Maynard, of Preston, and has issue one daughter.

Rev. Alfred Walmsley, The Hermitage, Standish; son of Thomas and Alice Walmsley, of Preston; born at Fulwood, November 5th, 1857; received his higher education at St. Edward’s College, Liverpool, and Ushaw College, co. Durham. Ordained Deacon, 1881, Priest, 1882, by Dr. Knight, Bishop of Shrewsbury; Assistant Priest at Thurnham, near Lancaster, 1882-85; Incumbent of Clifton Hill, 1885-89; Catholic Chaplain of Preston County Gaol, 1889-93; Incumbent of St. Mary’s, Standish, 1893; during his incumbency of Standish the schools have been enlarged by the addition of class-rooms and other conveniences.

James Ward, J.P., Whitegate Villa, Whitegate Drive, Blackpool; son of James Ward, yeoman, of Woodplumpton, near Preston; born August 19th, 1843; educated at Broughton Public School; came to reside in Blackpool in 1866. Justice of the Peace for the borough of Blackpool; Alderman of the Borough Council; elected member of the Town Council, 1885, and has been Chairman of the Highway and Promenade Extension Committees of the Corporation for several years; a Trustee and Governor of the Blackpool Hospital; was the Diamond Jubilee Mayor of Blackpool and was presented to Her Majesty the late Queen Victoria at Buckingham Palace, receiving from her the Silver Jubilee Badge. Married Margaret Hannah, daughter of Thomas Shorrock, of Huntley, Samlesbury, and has issue three sons and two daughters.

Edward Wilson, Broughton House, Broughton; son of J. W. R. Wilson; born at Preston, May 23rd, 1826; educated privately. Formerly member of the firm of Wilson, Wright, and Wilsons, solicitors, at Preston, which practice was carried on by his father and grandfather before him. Married Eliza Maria, daughter of James Pedder, of Ashton Lodge, Preston, and has issue four sons and five daughters.


Lieut.-Colonel John Arthur Winstanley, Bowerswood, near Garstang, Lancashire, and Forest Grange, Leicester; son of the late W. Winstanley, J.P., of Chaigley Manor, Clitheroe, and Westcliffe, Preston; born at Preston, June, 1856; educated at Pembroke College, Cambridge. Retired as Major and Hon. Lieut.-Colonel of the 4th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Derbyshire Regiment) in 1897, after twenty-two years’ service in the regiment.

Rev. Augustus Manley Winter, M.A., Penwortham Vicarage, Preston; son of the Rev. Alfred Litt Winter, Vicar of Oare, Kent; educated at Hertford College, Oxford; B.A., 1880; M.A., 1883. Vicar of Penwortham, 1894; formerly Curate of Bolsterstone, near Sheffield, 1881-94. Married, in 1884, Margaret Eva, daughter of the Rev. Thomas Preston, Vicar of Swaffham Prior, Cambs, and granddaughter of the late John Cobbold, of Ipswich.

Rev. Alexander William Wiseman, M.A., The Vicarage, Ashton-on-Ribble, Preston; son of Henry Richard Wiseman; born at Cambridge; educated at St. John’s College, Cambridge; M.A. Cambs. Vicar of Ashton-on-Ribble since 1887; formerly Curate of the Parish Church, Rochdale, and of Christ Church, Brighton, Sussex. Married Ellen, daughter of the Rev. Canon Humbert, of Winchester.
