Speaking out against slavery

Pat Harrison got in touch following yesterday’s post about Henry “Box” Brown, the former slave who came to Preston as a speaker to spread the message about the evils of slavery in the Deep South of the USA.

Pat, the chair of the Friends of Winckley Square, reminded us of another abolitionist speaker who visited Preston to speak at the Harris Institute:

‘You might or might not know that FoWS do a guided walk on International Women’s Day 8 March. For the last two years we have celebrated the lives of three women in the past who campaigned for equality, women’s suffrage, slavery abolition and mother and child well-being.

‘All are associated with the Winckley Square Quarter. Sarah Remond was the first woman and first black woman who was invited to speak at the Harris Art School.

‘We will be repeating this walk again in 2025 as we only do it once a year and it is always full.’

From the Wikipedia article on Sarah Remond:

‘Between 1859 and 1861, she gave more than 45 lectures in England, Ireland, and Scotland … Although before she sailed to the UK, Remond expected to confront prejudice similar as what she encountered in the United States … she met with a greater acceptance in Britain. “I have been received here as a sister by white women for the first time in my life,” she wrote; “I have received a sympathy I never was offered before.”

‘Remond was praised for her speeches, in which she spoke out against slavery and racial discrimination, stressing the sexual exploitation of black women under slavery’

‘… During her speaking tours of the British Isles, Remond and her fellow U.S. abolitionists drew comparisons between American slavery and the plight of the British working class during the Industrial Revolution, leading to abolitionists in Britain to note that their lectures were “packed almost entirely by [the] working class”.’
