Preston History FB group now has 5,000 members

The Preston History Facebook Group has grown and grown since it started 18 months ago as an add on to this website. This was the latest post on the group marking the signing on of member Number 5,000:

When I started this Facebook group 18 months ago, I little realised how quickly it would grow. We now have 5,000 members and more and more people are posting, commenting and sharing.

Itโ€™s a mark of the interest in the history of our city that so many should choose to engage with it online.

This group really took off when Ashley Warren Preston joined me as a group administrator. His regular posts here and on several other local FB groups are clearly appreciated to judge by the number of likes they attract. I really donโ€™t know where he finds the energy.

Looking back to the early days, I thought then that this group would be a niche meeting place for people who, like me, were interested in discussing local history. It has proved far more popular.

One concern I had was that our new group would be stepping on the toes of Nicola Martinโ€™s Preston Past and Present Facebook group. That group appeals to a far wider range of interests than just local history. So I thought there was room for both groups.

And so it has proved. We share our posts with Preston Past Present and share the relevant posts from them to our group. Both groups benefit. By the way, we are dwarfed by Preston Past and Present, which now has more than 72,000 members.

What I like about Facebook for local history is how wide its spread is, reaching many who would not normally get involved in the history of our city.

And it spreads worldwide. Our newest member lives in Wellington, New Zealand. He gave as his reason for joining: โ€˜My forebears came from Preston and Iโ€™m interested in finding out more about the city.โ€™

Do please keep posting, commenting and sharing. And do encourage others to join and contribute. Keep local history alive and thriving in Preston.
