Patti Mayor – Preston suffragette and artist

A letter written by Preston suffragette Grace Alderman that featured in a recent post mentioned one of her fellow suffragettes, Patti Mayor, the artist who painted the ‘The Half-Timer’ portrait.

This was a study of a twelve-year-old Preston mill worker, Annie Hall. The portrait, taken from its frame, was carried through London by Patti at the head of delegation from Preston at a famous suffragette march in London in 1908.

Patti was a member of a politically-committed group active in Preston before the First World War. The group included her close friend, the pacifist Joseph Garstang, who like many suffragettes was jailed and force fed.

Born in 1872, Patti was brought up in the Avenham district. Her family lived in Great Avenham Street and Chaddock Street, before moving to a house in Grosvenor Place in the new middle-class district in Ashton towards the end of the century. Patti’s father, Daniel, had set up in business as a rope and sack maker, an enterprise that continued until fairly recently.

While living in Ashton, Patti studied music before attending the Slade School of Fine Art in London. She went on to continue her studies in France, before returning to Preston where she set up an artist partnership with a Miss Bentham. They had studios in Woodcock’s yard and Fishergate in the early years of the last century.

At this period, Patti was living with her parents in their large house in Ashton, where she had a studio. Her sister Amy, a music teacher who taught at the Park School, was also living there. After the war, Patti moved to London and worked as a portrait painter, living at 14 Terrapin Road in Wandsworth, as late as 1939.

World War II brought her back to Preston, where she and Amy shared the house in Grosvenor Place, her parents having died. During the war, according to Keith Johnson, ‘she fund raised for refugees and the Red Cross and held exhibitions of her portraits, landscapes and flowers at her Grosvenor Place, Ashton home to raise cash.’

Patti died in 1962 aged ninety.
