Did suffragettes wear slacks?

With Preston’s suffragettes back in the news, I thought this rather surprising extract from a letter from one of those suffragettes might be of interest. She was imprisoned along with Edith Rigby and others from Preston in Holloway.

‘We didn’t stay cold and hungry__cooped up like lions and tigers in Prison Cells so that women could appear in Public in slacks tights or shorts they can please themselves or their husbands at home.
‘I knew someone who contemplated buying Slacks but her Husband told her “If you do I won’t walk on the same side of the road as you” so she never – that was soon settled!’

The letter was written in 1964 when the letter writer was nearing the end of her life. I came across it by accident and thought it would be of interest, especially with the plans for an Edith Rigby museum just announced.

It’s a long letter, getting on for 2,500 words, and full of information about the Preston suffragettes and their struggles. When I’ve finished transcribing it I’ll put it on line.
