‘Vanished Dwellings’ goes on line

The Preston historian Nigel Morgan who died in 2006 left a superb legacy in his published and unpublished writings about the nineteenth-century history of the town. He published two books, Vanished Dwellings and Deadly Dwellings, and had written a third, Desirable Dwellings, that should have completed the trilogy.

Sadly, the promise of a major American university to publish all three as a combined volume was never fulfilled, and so only two of the planned trilogy were published.

A few years back I discovered the typescript of Desirable Dwellings that Nigel had deposited in the UCLan library, with notes on the illustrations he planned to include. I decided to publish the book on my website, and went out with camera to photograph the buildings that Nigel wanted included (I was too late for some, the demolishers had got there first).

The book can now be found on line here:

The other two volumes in the trilogy are now out of print, and as it is unlikely that the American owner of the copyright will republish them, I decided to publish them on line. The first, Vanished Dwellings, is now on line and Deadly Dwellings will follow shortly:

They will not match the printed versions for quality (for that go the library or buy a used copy), but they will at least now be easily accessible. A further advantage is that optical character recognition means that they can be searched (the published versions do not have indexes).

Nigel also wrote his MPhil thesis on the history of nineteenth-century Preston, Social and Political Leadership in Preston 1820-60. I discovered a battered and faded photocopy of the typescript that Nigel had deposited in the UCLan library and painfully transcribed it. It is on line here:
