History on line in Lancashire

One of the benefits of holding a Lancashire County Library card is that it gives access to thousands of ebooks and audio books. Among them are a growing number of history books and these include, for example, the three volumes of the diaries of the Tory MP Henry ‘Chips’ Channon.

All three are weighty tomes, better to be tackled in small chunks rather than attempting to swallow them whole. But what gems they contain. The first volume includes all the salacious details of his private life, including the time the bisexual Channon shared a house and bed with one of the king’s equerries. They also shared a prostitute, set up in a London flat for their private use. Channon was generous with his sexual favours, even submitting to flagellation by a Catholic priest who happened to be a friend. He did not find the practice pleasurable.

The three volumes provide a fascinating insight into such subjects as Edward VIII (Channon was a friend) and the abdication crisis. And the extent to which sections of the British establishment were enamoured of Hitler and Mussolini.

They cover the period from 1918 to 1957 and are available as both ebooks and audiobooks. The ebooks work best because they contain the detailed notes provided by the editor, Simon Heffer. The notes work as pop-ups in the text and provide fascinating short biographies of a host of ‘Downton Abbey’ characters.
