After I put up the article on Septimus Tebay, Preston’s working-class maths prodigy, I was contacted by Anne Kidson, a direct descendant of Septimus’s brother. She began researching him some years ago after her mother told her he was ‘a drunken schoolmaster’. She has established that he did indeed die in the Farnworth workhouse, aged and destitute.
