The Great War experiences of
Fred Livesey, a Preston ‘Bantam’

The dissertation that Sean Livesey wrote for his history degree at the University of Lancashire recounts the experiences of his grandfather, Fred Livesey, in the Great War.

At just over five feet tall, Fred was barred from enlistment at the beginning of the war because the British Army set a minimum height of five feet and three inches for recruits.

His chance came with the formation of the ‘Bantam Battalions’ made up of men between five feet and five feet and three inches in height.

Fred, a 23-year-old labourer living in Preston with his wife, Ethel, was one of the first to enlist. He was sent to France in 1915, where he saw action on the Somme. He later recalled ‘going over the top’:

‘When I went over the top there was a 6-foot German coming towards me, and I thought you’re a goner here Fred. Then me mate stepped in front of me and stabbed him.’

Fred returned home in 1919, and Sean’s dissertation traces his life after the war when he became an enthusiastic member of the local sporting scene as a player and manager in the district football and cricket leagues.

Fred died in 1973 at the age of 82, a year after the death of his wife, Ethel.

His grandson, Sean, graduated with a first in history in 2023 at the age of 57. He was awarded the Sydney Lee Prize for the best overall performance in history.

He continued his studies at the University of Lancashire and this year completed a Master of Research (MRes) in History. When the Harris reopened at the end of September, Sean was one of the new staff greeting visitors.

Sean’s dissertation has been added to the Preston History Library.
