Preston history’s online presence grows

This is the post I put up on the Preston History Facebook group (https://www.facebook.com/groups/prestonhistory) to mark membership growing to more than 6,000. It is developing into an ever more lively forum for those interested in the history of the city:

More and more of you are
engaging with Preston’s history

Membership of the Preston History Facebook group has now grown to 6,000, less than two years since its formation. More and more people are choosing to engage online with the history of the city.

Thanks to all of you who have taken the time to contribute by posting, commenting and sharing our posts.

Do please continue to engage. We always welcome new contributors, and if you are reluctant to post for the first time, then why not post anonymously?

The group really took off when Ashley Warren Preston joined as a group administrator. His regular posts here and on several other local FB groups are clearly appreciated to judge by the number of likes they attract. I really don’t know where he finds the energy.

Looking back to the early days, I thought then that this group would be a niche meeting place for people who, like me, were interested in discussing local history. It has proved far more popular.

One concern I had was that our new group would be stepping on the toes of Nicola Martin’s Preston Past and Present Facebook group. That group appeals to a far wider range of interests than just local history. So I thought there was room for both groups.

And so it has proved. We share our posts with Preston Past Present and share the relevant posts from them to our group. Both groups benefit. By the way, we are dwarfed by Preston Past and Present. The group now has getting on for 74,000 members, showing just how keen the people of Preston are to learn about their past.
