On this day … 30 May 1857

The Preston Chronicle reported that the first hansom cab was about to make its appearance in the town:

A “HANSOM” CAB IN PRESTON
Mr. Lyon, coach builder, North-road, has at his establishment one of these unique conveyances, so much in vogue in most of our large towns. It is intended for Mr. G. Smith, livery stable keeper, and will commence running on Monday next. Being the first introduced into this town, there is no doubt it will be a source of considerable attraction; and we hope the spirited proprietor will receive a goodly share of support.

The cab was the invention of Joseph Hansom, the architect of St Walburge and St Ignatius churches, which he was working on some years before he arrived in Preston to set up his architectural practice.

Hansom was living in Leicestershire while he worked on his design for the cab. He patented his invention in 1834, and shortly after sold it for ยฃ10,000 (roughly ยฃ680,000 in todayโ€™s money). Unfortunately, he never saw the money, because the chap he sold it to ran out of cash and could not pay him.

Before long, his cab was seen on the streets of cities all around the world, and continued to be a popular form of transport into the twentieth century. Its now most familiar appearance is in the various adaptations of Conan Doyleโ€™s Sherlock Holmes stories.

The hansom cab appeared on Prestonโ€™s streets just a few years after the last sedan chair provided transport across the town’s muddy, and often filthy, thoroughfares.

The Mr G. Smith in the Chronicle notice above was George Smith, whose livery stables were at the Black-a-Moorโ€™s Head in Lancaster Road, where he was the landlord. He was soon advertising hansom cabs for hire alongside his other carriages.

It’s uncertain how popular the cabs were in Preston, certainly not as popular as in the major cities, for in Preston at that time most destinations were in easy reach on foot. And the columns of the Chronicle have few references to them, none advertising a taxi-style service.
