Preston Catholics excommunicated as
Pope Leo cracks down on rebel group

Preston’s history since the Reformation until well into the last century saw almost constant tension between Catholics and Protestants. Often there was also conflict within the Catholic community between those who wanted a quiet life, ‘hiding their light under a bushel’, and the more assertive members of the faith.

That tension within the community manifested itself most strongly during the times of Jacobite rebellion in the 18th century, when many of those assertive local members paid with their lives for taking part in the rebellions of 1715 and 1745.

Today those tensions emerged once more when Pope Leo excommunicated a group of ultra-conservative Catholics: the Society of Saint Pius X (SSPX). The group yesterday ordained a number of bishops without the consent of the pope. All members of the group, including priests and laity, have been declared in schism from the church and excommunicated.

This will include the SSPX congregation in Preston who worship at Our Lady of Victories church in East Cliff, off Winckley Square. The church is celebrating the 40th anniversary of the blessing of the church at the end of this month. The celebrations will include a solemn high mass at the church, followed ‘by an afternoon of traditional dancing, music, and fellowship’ at the Preparatory School of St. Pius X on Garstang Road, Fulwood.

The society’s main base in Preston is its priory, St Mary’s House in Ribblesdale Place, which is home to the society’s resident priests, who hold traditional Latin masses at the church on Sundays.
