Explore Whittle’s 1842 Preston Directory Online

Iโ€™ve added Peter Whittleโ€™s 1842 Preston Directory to the Preston History Library on my website. It was tacked onto a reprint of his second History of Preston that he published in 1837. He published his first history in 1821; both histories can be found in the Preston History Library.

Iโ€™ve put the directory online separate from the History to reduce the file size for downloading.

A page from 'The Commercial Directory of Preston' detailing various services, professional addresses, and historical information about the town.

The directory contains a great deal that will be of use for family historians and a wealth of information for anyone interested in the history of the town. Prominence is given to the included railway guide, since lines were only just opening around the town, but probably the most useful inclusion is a comprehensive directory of all the trades and businesses.

At the head of the trade directory, Whittle places a list of the โ€˜Gentry and Othersโ€™, which gives the names of the middle-class householders in the town along with their addresses.

Other useful contents are a street directory that helps locate any street in the town, and a chronology that is especially useful from 1745 when the British Courant Newspaper was published by James Stanley and John Moon, at their shop in the Market Place. He ends his chronology in 1840, when he records the launch of Pollards Preston Advertiser.

The trade directory contains a wealth of social history, such as the fact that, worryingly, there seemed to be only two dentists to serve a population of more than 70,000. They were: Charles Coppel, 51, Lune street and Robert Rose, 5, Chaddock street

There must have been a lot of servants in the town for there were five โ€˜Register Offices (Servants): Thomas Cockshot, 18, Avenham lane; Samuel Howman, 18, Avenham street; Miss Marsh, Woodcockโ€™s court; Mrs McNeil, 128, Fishergate; and Sarah Wilson, 3, St. Johnโ€™s Church yard

But my favourite is to learn that there were still four sedan carriers operating in Preston as late as 1842: Clitheroe John, Lordโ€™s walk; Cowperthwaite George, 10, Bell street; Simpson Richard, 16, Tythe Barn street; and Whittle Peter, 34, Whitaker row. I donโ€™t think the last was Peter Whittle, the publisher of the directory.

The directory is dated 1841 on the title page, but includes information dated 1842.

  1. Does anyone have a copy of pages 134-135 (time line) that appears to be missing in the Whittle 1842 directory?

      1. I’ve inserted the pages and reloaded the file. Do please let me know if it works for you, and, of course, please flag up any more omissions you discover
