A ‘missing’ History of Preston goes online

Preston is remarkably well served with early histories of the town, from Kuerden’s topographic description of Preston in the 1680s through to Clemesha’s history of the town published in 1912. In between, came the two volumes of Peter Whittle’s history, histories by Hardwick and Fishwick, and, the most useful, Anthony Hewitson’s History of Preston published in 1883.

All have been made available online, thanks to the Internet Archive, Google and the Hathi Trust, and have been added to the Preston History Library on this website. The one exception was the second volume of Peter Whittle’s History. I have now digitised a copy and added it to the Preston History Library.

Both of Peter Whittle’s histories include a commercial directory for Preston, the first dated 1821 and the second tacked on to the second volume of his history in an 1841 reprint. I’ll be adding that second directory to the Preston History Library shortly.

The plus with these online volumes is that they are fully searchable, a vast improvement on the limitations of traditional indexes; their drawback is that they are in pdf format, which is difficult to read on mobiles and tablets.
