Wilfrid Francis Anderton, J.P., Haighton, near Preston; youngest son of James Francis Anderton and Mary, daughter of James Sidgreaves, of Inglewhite Lodge, Goosnargh; born at Haighton, October 25th, 1844; educated at Stonyhurst College. Justice of the Peace for the County of Lancaster; Chairman of the Visiting Committee of H.M.Prison, Preston; Vice-Chairman of the Preston Rural District Council; Chairman of the Haighton Parish Council. Married, firstly, in 1870, Mildred Walburga, daughter of the late Henry Tempest, brother of Sir Charles R. Tempest, Bart., of Broughton, Yorkshire; she died in 1876, leaving two sons, Angilbert Wilfrid, Evan Gerard, and one daughter, Mildred Mary; secondly, Mary Louisa Frances, only daughter of the late Joseph Francis Tempest, brother of the above; by whom he has issue two sons, Dunstan Francis, Cuthbert Francis, and two daughters, Elfrith Mary Frances, and Winefride.
Frederick Baynes
Frederick Baynes, D.L., J.P., Samlesbury Old Hall, near Preston; son of John Baynes, D.L., J.P., of Blackburn; born at Blackburn, February, 1848; educated at Rugby and St. John’s College, Cambridge. Deputy Lieutenant for the County of Lancaster; Mayor of Blackburn, 1897; High Sheriff of Lancashire for 1900; Director of the L N.W. Railway Company. Married Anna Adelaide, daughter of the late Thomas Simpson, J.P., of Foxhillbank, and has issue two sons and two daughters.
Samlesbury Hall is one of the finest examples of a Tudor timbered mansion in England. It is constructed in the form of the letter L, and is remarkable for the quantity and quality of its oak carvings worked timber. The great hall has a fine open roof, and evidences remain of the former use of one part of it as a chapel. The house contains many beautiful paintings and objects of interest, and the finely laid out grounds are well in keeping with the mansion.
William Blackhurst
William Blackhurst, Grimsargh Cottage, Grimsargh, near Preston; son of William Blackhurst, of Preston, solicitor; born at Preston, July 1st, 1826; educated at Preston Grammar School. Admitted solicitor in 1851; practising at Preston, Blackpool, and Garstang; took over the business of his father and brother in 1852; Solicitor to the Preston and District Licensed Victuallers’ Association. Married, December 14th, 1846, Mary Ann, daughter of the late Thomas Sinfield, and has had issue eleven children; his sixth son, Alfred, who is in partnership with him, was admitted a solicitor in 1894.

Thomas Blane, Craigmuir, 199, Hornby Road, Blackpool; son of Edward Blane, of Manchester; born at Manchester, June 3rd, 1851; has been a resident in Blackpool since 1858; educated at the Grammar School, Preston. Member of the firm of Blane and Riding, chartered accountants, Blackpool; has been associated with all the pioneer companies that have led to the development of Blackpool, amongst which are the North Pier Company, the Central Pier Company, the Claremont Park Company, the Winter Gardens Company, and the Steamboats Company, etc. Married Mary, daughter of the late S. Bailey, of Manchester.

Thomas Obadiah Clinning

Justice of the Peace for Lancashire and for the borough of Southport; formerly in the American produce trade at Liverpool, retiring in 1867; member of the Board of the Southport Convalescent Home; Vice-President Southport Infirmary; Hon. Treasurer of the Southport Provident Society and the Southport Savings Bank; member of the Birkdale and Southport Golf Clubs; for twenty-two years a member of the Birkdale Local Board and District Council; for twelve years a County Councillor, and six years Alderman of the Lancashire County Council; Vice-Chairman of the Southport, Birk dale and West Lancashire Water Board; formerly Chairman and now Vice-Chairman of the Ormskirk Board of Guardians, and a member for twenty years. Married Sarah Ellen, daughter of the late Thomas Bird, of Chorley, Lancashire; she died August 9th, 1899.

Articled to the firm of Buck and Dicksons, solicitors, of Preston, afterwards joining them, and practising for many years in Southport and Preston; dissolved partnership on June 30th, 1899, taking Southport practice himself, with his eldest son, George, B.A. Cantab, as partner, practising under the style of Buck, Cockshott and Cockshott : member of the Southport Town Council from 1880-83. retiring through pressure of business; Justice of the Peace for the borough; Hon. Solicitor to Southport Infirmary; member of the House of Laymen for the Province of York; Vice-President of the Voluntary Schools Association for the Diocese of Liverpool; Vice-Chairman of the Church of England Temperance Society for the Diocese of Liverpool. Appointed Secretary to the Accrington Gas and Waterworks Company, in 1868; Secretary to the Tawd Vale Colliery Company, Ltd., in 1872; commenced as an accountant on own account at Southport in 1875, and in 1883 entered into partnership with Alderman Henry Davies, of Preston; now practising under the style of Davies and Crane, of Preston and Southport; Managing Director of the Southport Brewery Company, Ltd.; Secretary to the Southport Baths Company, Ltd.; Auditor to the Prince of Walesโs Hotel Company, Ltd., the Scarisbrick Hotel Company, Ltd., the Southport Pier Company, Limited, and the Smedley Hydropathic Company, Ltd., Birkdale, etc.; was one of the Liquidators of the late Southport Pavilion and Winter Gardens Company, Ltd., and is now joint Receiver of the Southport Opera House and Winter Gardens, Ltd. Thomas Miller Crook
Thomas Miller Crook, Stanley Grange, Samlesbury (Postal via Hoghton), near Preston; only son of John Miller and Elizabeth Crook; born at Blackburn, May 14th, I859; educated at Clitheroe Grammar School. Has a herd of well known pedigree shorthorn cattle, and has during the last twelve years taken first prizes at the Royal Agricultural Societyโs Exhibition, Great Yorkshire, Royal Lancashire, and other provincial shows; amongst the herd is the yearling bull, โRoyal Recorder,” bought at His Majesty the King’s last spring sale, 1903; has also a very large collection of orchids, including a number of very rare specimens; restored St. Leonardโs-the-less Church, Samlesbury, 1901, and added a new tower and clock, a peal of bells being presented by Mrs. Crook; the original church existed in 1196,and was rebuilt by the Earl of Derby about 1559. Married Alice Wood, youngest daughter of William Barker, Netherleigh, Beeston, Notts.
Stanley Grange, four miles south of Preston, is a modern residency, rebuilt in 1892; it stands on an eminence commanding extensive views of the Ribble Valley and estuary, and also of the Cumberland Westmoreland Hills.
