Testing AI and local history research

The early historians of Preston made extensive use of some pages from the ‘White Book’, a hefty tome containing handwritten records of the proceedings of the Common Council of Preston from 1608 to 1781.

But, as yet, nearly all its contents, and there are more than 800 pages, remain an untapped source for the history of the town. I’d started the task of slowly working through the pages, extracting relevant information relating to people, places and events mentioned.

Then the recent posts on the Preston History group about AI for historians decided me to give it a try on the White Book.

I think the result is impressive, especially the signatures. Until now, optical character recognition software has only been able to handle printed text; AI has extended that to handwritten documents.

If it works for the White Book, I have images of hundreds of Preston wills that I will experiment with transcribing next. I will also test the other AI software, including Transkribus. If it proves successful, it would mean I could have spared myself hours and hours of donkey work over the years if it had been introduced earlier.

Below is the result for one of the pages (pictured) that ChatGPT produced in milliseconds. ChatGPT, which is free to use, refers to itself in the first person:

Here is a best-effort diplomatic transcription of the handwritten page. I’ve kept original spelling, capitalization, and punctuation as much as possible, and I mark uncertain words with [?].

At a meeting of Mr Mayor and Common Council

  • Modernize the spelling and punctuation
  • Identify the people named
  • Explain the legal meaning of the entry
  • Format this for archival or genealogy use

  1. Great work! I have been researching my Cockshutt / Cockshoot family history and found references on this site which have set me off on whole new lines of enquiry. Keep up the great work.

  2. Nice job! I wonder if Mr Mayor is related to the Preston Mayors on my family tree (Patti Mayors lot). Patti Mayor was my great great Aunt, but there seem to be many different branches of that family in Preston!
