The troubled life of Robert Pateson

The biography of Preston’s
first photographer goes on line

Many of you will be familiar with the images of Victorian Preston captured by the town’s first photographer, Robert Pateson. What many will not realise is just how varied his life was.

A far more rounded picture of that life, exploring all its many different directions and its many tribulations, has been provided by John Garlington in a short biography, ‘Robert Pateson: Preston’s Forgotten Philanthropist’. It was often a troubled existence.

John originally published it as an eBook, and it is still available on Amazon. But he has decided to make it available online for free. It can now be found in the Preston History Library:
Robert Pateson: Preston’s Forgotten Philanthropist

One of the John’s reasons for making the biography more widely available is to secure recognition for Robert’s place in the history of Preston.

John believes the house in Cross Street where Robert Pateson used to live is long overdue for a blue plaque commemorating Preston’s first photographer. He hopes this biography will lend support to those pressing for that deserved recognition.

* John’s latest publication is ‘Into the Sandhole: Preston’s Victorian Red Light District’.
