A result for the Preston History FB group

One of the first posts in the Preston History Facebook group back on 10 December concerned Lancashire County Council’s Historic Town Assessment Report for Preston, Walton-le-Dale and Penwortham, one of the thirty-three reports published for Lancashire towns. These had all been put on line by LCC, but were later removed.

I contacted the council to make a case for their value to local historians and urge that they be put back on line. Failing that, I sought permission to put the Preston report on line on my website.

Last week the council got back to me with the news that ‘Investigations into having them made available via the County Council’s MARIO webpage have been ongoing, but it is unlikely to happen in the short term’. But they saw ‘no problem with the Preston report being made available on your website’.

Now they have come back with excellent news:

‘… our GIS team have now added an ‘Historic Town Reports’ layer onto LCCs MARIO webpage. If you wish to avoid the cost of hosting the Preston report on your website, you are welcome to direct people to MARIO as these reports will be available here on a permanent basis.

‘If you open mario select the ‘Heritage Maps and Aerials’ layers from ‘Map Categories’, switch on the ‘Historic Town Reports’ layer, click on the 3 dots and then click on ‘Zoom to’, the appropriate layer be will be displayed. If you also select ‘View in Attribute Table’ a list of the 33 town reports will be displayed on the lower half of the screen. If you click in the box to the left of the relevant town name in that list, this will select it and then once it’s highlighted, double click on that town name and a link to the pdf document should appear in the pop-up window …’

I’ve tested it and it works.
