Joseph Eccles, J.P., Myerscough House, Garstang; son of Joseph Eccles, J.P., of Darwen; born at Darwen, March 4th, 1846; educated at Blackburn Grammar School. Justice of the Peace for the County of Lancaster and borough of Preston. Head of the firm of Joseph Eccles and Company, cotton spinners and manufacturers, of Preston. Married the daughter of Malcolm Holden, of Darwen, and has issue five sons and two daughters.

William Eccles, The Grange, Colne; son of the late Joseph Eccles, of Ashton, near Preston; born at Accrington, July 11th, 1865; educated at Pembroke House, Lytham. Partner in the firm of Joseph Eccles and Company, cotton manufacturers, of Colne and Preston. Married, September 16th, 1897, Emily, daughter of Hargreaves Ainsworth, of Windermere, and has issue two daughters, Kathryn and Emily Eileen

Thomas Fair, J.P., Clifton Hall, near Preston; son of the late James Fair, J.P., of Lytham, by Elizabeth, daughter of Alexander Bannerman; born at Lytham, August 6th, 1836; educated at Repton School under the Rev. T. W. Peile, D.D. Land agent, and Fellow of the Surveyors’ Institution; succeeded his father, in 1862, as principal agent of the extensive Clifton and Lytham Estates, which comprise the towns of Lytham and St. Anne’s-on-Sea, and belonging to J. Talbot Clifton; a Justice of the Peace of the County of Lancaster since 1875; elected three times unopposed for the Lancashire County Council; is a member of the House of Laymen for the Province of York; Chairman of the Trustees of the Lytham Charities. Married, firstly, in 1860, Louisa, daughter of the late B. Stretton, of Crumpsall, Manchester; she died in 1896; secondly, in 1900, Ethel, daughter of William Pilkington, D.L., of Roby Hall, Liverpool.

Richard Kay Fenton, J.P., Dutton Manor, Longridge, and Clegg Hall, near Rochdale; son of the late James Fenton, M.A., F.S.A., J.P.; born at Lymm Hall, Cheshire, March 2nd, 1853; educated at Uppingham, and Trinity College, Cambridge. Justice of the Peace for Lancashire; Lord of the Manors of Dutton and Ribchester; Vice-Chairman of Preston Board of Guardians; Chairman of Preston Rural District Council. Married Ella Mary, only daughter of the late Rev. H. Williams, Vicar of Risca, and has issue one son, born June 12th, 1895, and one daughter, Helen Mary, born December 27th, 1902.


Lieut.-Colonel Henry Fishwick, J.P., The Heights, Rochdale; son of the late Henry Halliwell Fishwick; born at Rochdale, March 9th, 1835. Lieut.-Colonel 3rd Volunteer Battalion of the Lancashire Fusiliers (now retired); Justice of the Peace for the County of Lancaster and the borough of Rochdale; Alderman and oldest member of the Rochdale Town Council; Chairman of the Public Libraries, Art Gallery, and Museum Committees; Chairman of the late Rochdale School Board, to which he was elected in 1870; has written many works, chiefly relating to Lancashire, amongst which are, “A History of Goosnargh,” “A History of Rochdale,” “A History of Preston,” “The Lancashire Library,” “A Popular History of Lancashire,” etc., published by the Chetham Society, of which he is Vice-President. Has also edited many books for the Lancashire and Cheshire Record Society, and the Lancashire Parish Register Society, of both of which he is President; is Hon. Local Secretary to the Society of Antiquaries, London. Married Ellen, daughter of the late Dr. W. H. Bullmore, of Truro.

John Forshaw, Hurst Grange, Penwortham; son of Henry Forshaw; born at Preston, in 1837; educated at the Commercial School, Preston, and at Whalley Grammar School. Founder of the firm of Forshaw and Parker, solicitors, 9 and 10, Cannon Street, Preston; Perpetual Commissioner and Commissioner for Oaths for the Colony of Victoria; Notary Public; Law Clerk to the Lytham Improvement Commissioners; Clerk to the Garstang Magistrates; Senior Alderman of the borough of Preston; Mayor of the Borough, 1883-4-5; Chairman of the Finance and Ribble Committees of the Corporation; Director of Preston Gas Company; Trustee of Harris Orphanage, etc. Married, in 1862, Hester Eliza, daughter of James Horrocks, and grandniece of John Horrocks, of the late firm of Horrocks and Jackson, cotton manufacturers, of Preston, and has issue six daughters and two sons.

James Gregson, Highgate Park, Fulwood; son of James Gregson, machine maker, Preston; descendant of the old family of Josias Gregson, Guild Mayor of Preston, 1702; born at Preston, in 1833; educated at Preston. Head of the firm of Gregson and Monk, machinists, loom makers and engineers, Vulcan Iron Works, Preston, and Atherton Brothers, Ltd., Hanover Street Foundry, Preston; also Director of the Longridge Manufacturing Company, Ltd.; inventor of many improvements in weaving and preparing machinery, notably : patent driving wheels, patent sizing machine, patent stop rod, patent shuttles, patent dobby, patent swell, patent automatic self-shuttling loom, which have been of great service in the improvements of cotton machinery for weaving good cotton fabrics; formerly, and for many years, member of Fulwood District Council.

Henry Hamer, 15, Scarisbrick Street, Southport; son of the Rev. Henry Hamer, of Liverpool, and of Poyntington Rectory, near Sherborne, Dorsetshire; born at Poyntington Rectory, September 10th, 1841; educated at Sherborne School; is the present representative of the Saxon family of Hamer, of Hamer, Rochdale, and (since 1640) of Liverpool. Solicitor, and Town Clerk of Preston; Clerk to the Urban Sanitary Authority; Registrar, Court of Record; Clerk to School Attendance Committee and to Port Sanitary Authority; Solicitor and Secretary to the River Ribble Navigation from its inception, 1882, all of Preston Corporation; Clerk to the Pilotage Sub-Commissioners of Trinity House for the Port of Preston, and Clerk to the Preston Guilds Merchant of 1882 and of 1902. Married, September 10th, 1867, Margaret, eldest daughter of John James Henderson, of Rylston House, Rylston, Yorks (West Riding).

Joseph Hutchinson Hammond, M.D., J.P., 11, Winckley Square, Preston; son of Jonas Hammond; born at Scarborough, January 29th, 1827; educated privately, and at Glasgow University, St. Thomas’s Hospital, and Paris; M.D., Aberdeen; M.R.C.P. Lond. Joined Army Medical Department in January, 1855; Consulting Physician to St. Joseph’s Hospital, Stonyhurst College and Rossall School; Justice of the Peace for the County of Lancaster; Vice-Chairman of the Standing Joint Committee of the County of Lancaster; Trustee of Goosnargh Hospital; Chairman of Preston High School for Girls; member of the Council for the Harris Institute; Chairman of Committee, Domestic School of Science; member of the Central Committee, Royal Albert Asylum.

Ralph Edmund Harrison, late of Brungerley, near Clitheroe; son of James Harrison, of Valentine House and Cottam Hall; born at Valentine House, Cottam, March 9th, 1852; educated at Preston Grammar School. Formerly engaged in farming; was a member of the Royal Agricultural Society, and a breeder of shire horses. Married Mary Moore, the daughter of Alderman J. B. Hallmark, J.P., of Preston and Walton-le-dale.

Rev. John Denby Harrison, M.A., Ph.D., The Vicarage, Barton, Preston; son of Anthony Harrison; born at Stalybridge, May 17th, 1842; educated at Manchester Grammar School, Owens College, Queen’s College, Birmingham, and Rostock University; M.A., Ph.D. Vicar of St. Lawrence’s, Barton, since 1870; ordained Deacon, 1867; Priest, 1868, at Chester; formerly Curate of St. John the Baptist‘s, Liverpool, Emmanuel Church, Liverpool, and Christ Church, Preston; Chaplain of Fulwood Workhouse since 1882, author of “The Identity of the British, the Anglo-Saxon and the Catholic Churches: a Religious Controversy with the late Roman Catholic Bishop of Salford,” “Morning and Evening Prayers” (Haddon, Best and Co., Local Government Publishers), 1888, and other publications; held the Secretaryships of the Royal Cross Deaf School, Preston, and the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals; was instrumental in building the new Church of St. Lawrence, Barton, one of the prettiest in North Lancashire.


Rev. Patrick Joseph Hayden, S.J., St. John’s, Wigan; eldest son of the late William Hayden, of Rathellen, Carlow, Ireland; born December 8th, 1859; educated at St. Francis Xavier’s College, Liverpool; studied philosophy at Stonyhurst College, Blackburn, and theology at St. Beuno’s College, St. Asaph, North Wales. Ordained at St. Beuno’s by the Right Rev. Edmund Knight, Bishop of Shrewsbury; while a scholastic at the Sicilian Jesuit College at Gozo he preached every Sunday for two years to the Catholic soldiers of the garrison; was afterwards a missioner at the Church of the Sacred Heart, Edinburgh, for three years, and for four years in charge of St. Mary’s, Preston, the oldest Catholic church in the town; now Priest-in-Charge of St. John’s, Standishgate, Wigan, which church, while under his care, has been artistically re-decorated, and the electric light and other improvements introduced.

Rev. Charles Edward Haynes, M.A., Emmanuel Vicarage, 23, Newsham Drive, Liverpool; son of the Rev. E. J. Haynes, late Vicar of Christ Church, Fulwood; born at Fulwood, Preston, May 29th, 1865; educated privately and at Hertford College, Oxford; B.A., 1889; M.A., 1894. Ordained Deacon, 1889, Priest, 1890, by the Bishop of Gloucester and Bristol; Curate of St. Paul, Cheltenham, 1889-90; Cheltenham, 1890-91; Broadwater, Sussex, 1891-94; Vicar of Holy Trinity with St. Matthew, Worthing, 1894-1900; Curate of Ecclesall, Sheffield, 1900-01; Vicar of Emmanuel, Liverpool, from 1901; member of the East Preston (Sussex) Board of Guardians, 1897-1901; Worthing School Board, 1899-1900; Surrogate for the Diocese of Liverpool; Member of the West Derby, Liverpool, Board of Guardians, 1903; during his vicariate at Worthing he was instrumental in building the new Church of St. Matthew at a cost of £4000, also a Vicarage for the mother Church of Holy Trinity at a cost of £3500. Married, in 1891, Margaret Jane. daughter of the late Rev. Henry Law, Vicar of Chepstow, descendant of the author of “Law’s Serious Call.”

Rev. Canon Henry Henn, M.A., Bolton Vicarage, Castle Street, Bolton; son of the late Thomas Rice Henn, Q.C., D.L., Recorder of Galway, of Paradise Hill, co. Clare, and his wife, Jane Isabella, second daughter of Right Hon. Francis Blackburne, Lord Chancellor of Ireland; born at Greystones, co. Wicklow, October 8th, 1858; educated at Sherborne School, where he obtained the King’s Classical Medal, and at Trinity Hall, Cambridge; graduated B.A., 1881; M.A., 1884; placed sixth in 1st Class of Classical Tripos; elected a Fellow in 1881, and studied for the Bar at Lincoln’s Inn till 1884. Ordained Deacon by the Bishop of Manchester, 1886; Priest, 1887; was fifteen months Curate of the Parish Church, Preston; in 1888 appointed Dean of Trinity Hall, Cambridge, and subsequently Bursar and Divinity Lecturer of the College, and during six years served on various University Boards and Syndicates, and was one of the Public Examiners in the University; Vicar of the Parish of St. Paul, Preston, and Chaplain of the Preston Royal Infirmary, 1894; Chaplain to the 5th Lancashire Volunteer Artillery, 1896; Select Preacher before the University of Cambridge, 1894-95, and 1901; Vicar of Bolton in 1902; Chaplain of the Bolton Union Workhouse, 1903; is Rural Dean of Bolton, Hon. Canon of Manchester, and Surrogate of the Diocese of Manchester: member of the Diocesan Church Schools Association, and of the Education Committee of the Bolton Education Authority; was First Commodore of Cambridge University Cruising Club, and is still a member.

Major William Henry Hincksman, V.D., J.P., The Starr Hills, Lytham; son of Thomas Crouch Hincksman, of Preston and Lytham; born at Preston, January 27th, 1835; educated at Preston Grammar School and Wesley College, Sheffield. Major of the 3rd Battalion Lancashire Regiment; V.D.; appointed Justice of the Peace for the County of Lancaster, 1892; formerly Director of the Preston Banking Company, and also Chairman of the Preston Gas Company. Married Louisa, daughter of the late Rev. Samuel Broadbent, Wesleyan minister, and has issue two daughters and one son.
